I just got done with one of the most interesting service projects I’ve ever been part of; one that I see has a lot of potential for all sorts of causes.

I just called about 40 unregistered voters in California to remind them to mail in their registration form by Monday, via Rock the Vote. While the project itself doesn’t sound too mind blowing, it was how we did it.

Rock the Vote has a Facebook Application that anyone can install to call people in states where voter registration is still open from a list of people who were previously sent voter registration forms from Rock the Vote.

As you can see, they supply you with a name and number and a script with every possible scenario and outcome. The majority ended up being voicemail messages, but how awesome is this? Anyone can join, call, and help the cause. We’re in Tallahassee calling voters in California.

A group of about 20 of us got together and in 90 minutes we called over 1100 people.

Think about all the causes that could use something like this. Whether you call 1 or 100 people, each call helps take the load off struggling non-profits who would’ve needed to hire someone to do this.

And through the magic of Facebook, the Application even put a message in my feed letting everyone know I’m getting people to register to vote, with a link for them to add the application and help too.

The app was developed by Nico Networks. No idea what it costs, but I’m sure it’s cheaper than hiring a telemarketing team.

Hopefully more organizations will start using Facebook Applications to their full potential, and for causes a little more meaningful than sending Bumper Stickers.

And of course, make sure you’re registered to vote and vote on November 4!

Besides my previously mentioned MIXXT and Popego, here are my two other favs from my first day:

Fitbit is actually a device that you wear to track your movement and fitness. It’s more than a pedometer, with an accelerometer and other gizmos inside to track a range of data, such as three dimensional movement and calorie burn and how much you slept. When you walk by the base station connected to your computer, the data is automatically uploaded. Like RescueTime tracks your computer use, Fitbit tracks your physical activity with the idea being you can adjust your habits and become more fit. $99 to buy the device and the website tracking is included.

Swype is a new way to input text. It’s from the guy who created the current input software that’s on like a billion phones. On a querty keyboard on a touch input screen, instead of tapping each letter, you swipe over each letter to spell the word. The technology recognizes what word you want and types it. Once you get the hang of it you can get about 50 WPM.

I’ve finally arrived to TechCrunch50 and snagged a seat in the front. Just saw the first session. Popego and MIXTT I thought were the best and most interesting so far.

Popego is a cooler, more useful version of FriendFeed to filter out the best of the web for you. MIXTT is sort of a mashup of Meetup and MySpace/Facebook.

Right now money and finance businesses are up. Not too life hackery, but still interesting. Soon I’ll explore the showroom floor.

Basically, 50 companies present to some of the most influential venture capitalists and press (me?) to launch their company and explain what it is. The only requirement is TechCrunch is when they launch, so no one knows what’s going to be presented.

Last year Mint, my favorite money management tool, launched and even won Best Presenter (check out the link to win a free pass to TechCrunch50).

There is one little secret they let out – Ashton Kutcher will be launching Blah Girls at the event.

I will be video podcasting, which means it will launch sometime next week (hopefully this weekend).

Let me know if you’re going in the comments.

Hi there! Yes, I’m doing a documentary on life hacking because I’ve been interested in the idea for about 2 years and no one else has documented it (in a movie, at least).

This site is fairly new, so I don’t have any ‘must read’ posts. I am looking for people in the southeast for a long term case study, so if you know anyone I’d love to talk.

I’m also a film student and so far this has been self-funded, so if you feel like helping out you can make the film that much better.

That’s about it. Don’t forget to subscribe if you’d like to stay updated and experience the making of a documentary. There will also be a video podcast coming soon.

Thanks for stopping by!

Went to WordCamp 2008 today. I was a little late due to airline issues, but made it in time to see Matt Mullenweg’s State of the Word.

I also caught the SEO Rapper, who did a little WordPress tune. I asked him if he’d like to do one on life hacking for the doc. He said he’d be interested, so we’ll see how this goes.

But as for WordCamp, it was way awesome to finally go to something I only read about. But I’m really surprised that only a few people knew what life hacking is. More reason for this doc.
